OCALA, Fla. - Jacob Thurnherr's job this summer was to get one. The 19- year- old spent the better part of each week filling out applications to be a cook, a stocker, a sales clerk, a construction worker, a grocery bagger, a burger flipper - "anything", he said. "I combed the whole city of Ocala. I looked in Gainesville, even Jacksonville," he said. But no employers ever called back.

MELBOURNE, Fla. — Florida Senator Mike Haridopolos (R-Melbourne) presented an honorary scholarship in his name recently to a deserving student at the Melbourne campus of Everest University.
Cocoa resident Danielle Campbell wrote an essay about “What I Plan to do with my Education,” and was chosen as the first recipient of the Sen. Mike Haridopolos Honorary Scholarship by the senator, Everest University, and the Florida Association of Postsecondary Schools and Colleges (FAPSC), which instituted this scholarship program in honor of Haridopolos, its Legislator of the Year.

Fort Myers, FL - One year ago, just 80 students were taking classes at Rasmussen College's branch campus in Fort Myers. That's smaller than a single class at many universities.
A lot has changed in the past 12 months, though. Enrollment has surged to 350 this summer, and the influx prompted Rasmussen to add degree programs and sign a lease that almost doubles the college's square footage.

"Sixty-two colleges, universities and schools across Florida have entered into Yellow Ribbon Program agreements" with the VA, "the White House Media Affairs Office announced" Monday. The WJHG-TV Panama City, FL (7/13) website published a similar story, as does the Bradenton (FL) Herald (7/14, Kennedy) and the Lehigh Acres (FL) Citizen (7/14), which notes, "In Southwest Florida, only three colleges are listed among the 62. They include Rasmussen College, Ave Maria University at Ave Maria near Naples, and the Heritage Institute in Fort Myers."

Fort Myers, FL - Some 62 colleges, universities and schools across Florida have entered into Yellow Ribbon Program agreements with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to improve financial aid for veterans participating in the new Post-9/11 GI Bill program.
In Southwest Florida, only three colleges are listed among the 62. They include Rasmussen College, Ave Maria University at Ave Maria near Naples, and the Heritage Institute in Fort Myers. FGCU, Hodges University and others in Southwest College are not listed on the

Fort Myers, FL - Four area private colleges are removing financial barriers for military veterans, pledging to cover tuition costs that exceed caps set by the federal government.
Ave Maria University, Barry University, Heritage Institute and Rasmussen College have joined the Post-9/11 G.I. Bill's Yellow Ribbon Program. Once the government sets its new maximum reimbursement rate for 2009-10, the private schools and feds will split the extra cost if tuition bills exceed the federal cap.

Miami- Dade Medical College’s “Adopt-a-School” program took on two schools in one day on May 22, 2009: Miami Senior High and Coral Gables Senior High. Each school received a $5,000 check from Dade Medical CEO Ernesto Perez – Miami’s will benefit the student incentive program; the donation to Coral Gables will be used for instructional programs, textbooks, athletic equipment and drama / band materials and equipment. Dade Medical offers diplomas and or Associate of Science degrees in the fields of Diagnostic Medical Ultrasound, Diagnostic Cardiac Sonography, General Radiologic Technology, Massage Therapy and Medical Assistant.

But these high-profile professionals will need more laboratory workers to handle all the new samples of blood, tissue and other materials. These behindthe scenes "detectives" of health care help make up a $52 billion-per-year medical laboratory industry.

Miami- In the interest of providing additional opportunities to potential students, the Florida Association of Postsecondary Schools and Colleges has once again moved the deadline for submission for a $1,000 or $5,000 Dade Medical College scholarship to June 30th, 2009. There is still more than $130K available for various programs of study at the Miami and Hialeah campuses of the college, including Diagnostic Cardiac Sonography, Diagnostic Medical Ultrasound, General Radiologic Technologist and more.

Orlando-Orlando Culinary Academy today announced the local winners of the 5th Annual Le Cordon Bleu Schools North America Future Chef of America Scholarship Competition. Ten future students enrolled in an affiliate school of Le Cordon Bleu Schools North America participated in the annual event that took place on May 9; and three received scholarships to attend the Orlando culinary school. First, second and third place winners took home scholarships for $10,000, $5,000 and $2,500, respectively.

TAMPA — Students at Everest University-Tampa – one of Florida’s leading career colleges with 14 campuses across the state – will benefit from a new, $2 million 30,000 square-feet campus expansion that includes a new trades program for electrical and heating/air-conditioning repair training and a massage therapy clinic.
A dedication and Greater Tampa Chamber of Commerce ribbon-cutting for the facility was held at today at the new East Building of Everest University-Tampa at 3251 W. Hillsborough Ave.

FORT MYERS- Art teacher James Hixson didn't show up for work today (Monday) at Gateway Charter High School. Instead, Principal Joe Roles approved his time off to attend the very prestigious Sculpture in the South Art Show held in Summerville S.C. Only 35 artists in the nation are invited to the show and Hixson's sculptures attracted the attention of show organizers.

PASCO- The Pasco Hernando Workforce Board will offer a career training fair and expo at 8:30 a.m. today at Rasmussen College, 2127 Grand Blvd. Local selected schools will present training programs to workers who have lost their jobs. Participants can learn more about training programs and funding for occupations that are projected to grow over the next few years.

OAKBROOK TERRACE, IL- With funding from the CompTIA Educational Foundation and other corporate sponsors, the first four-year students from Dunbar High School’s Academy for Technology Excellence are set to graduate next month.
With as many as 14 tech certifications each, 26 graduating seniors are ready to embark on full-time IT careers or use their credentials for extra college credits as they pursue more advanced degrees. Located in the Lee County school district of Fort Myers, Fla., the academy is a model for how schools around the country can provide high-end technology training and experience to high school students.

Bartness has spent more than 15 years in upper management positions and brings a plethora of compliance and analytical experience with him.

LEE COUNTY, Fla - Health care is one of the few fields that hasn't had major struggles because of the economy. One area in particular could continue to be a big boom for new jobs.
"We are the behind the scenes workers processing the samples for you," said Melissa Rose of NeoGenomics Laboratories. Inside their labs in Lee County, technicians carefully study blood and tissue samples, looking for signs of cancer. It's critical work for diagnosing disease, but finding people willing to do it has been difficult.

Fort Myers, FL- Eric Whitehouse, campus director, and the faculty of Rasmussen College presented The Foundation for Lee County Public Schools with a $5,000 donation. The donation will enable the foundation to continue with its mission of enhancing the quality of Lee County public education. According to Whitehouse, his college became involved as volunteers first and the opportunity to provide financial support was the next logical step. Miami-Dade, FL- Dade Medical College will be awarding area high school and GED graduates $140,000 in scholarships through the Florida Association of Postsecondary Schools and Colleges.
The Miami and Hialeah campuses will each present 30 scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $5,000 for programs such as General Radiologic Technologist, Diagnostic Medical Ultrasound, Diagnostic Cardiac Sonography and others.
To be considered for a scholarship, students must be a Florida high school senior with a minimum a 2.0 grade-point average and graduated during the 2008-09 school year. Those with high school equivalency degrees must have been awarded the GED between March 1, 2008, and Feb. 27, 2009

Fort Myers, FL- Newspress.com: Home-schooler with Asperger's syndrome can't take GED test for two years. Kaymen Lackey is ready for college. High school coursework was a piece of cake, and he's eyeing a major in computer technology or design. There's just one problem. Kaymen is only 14 and, chronologically, should be in eighth grade. The Fort Myers youth has hit a roadblock in his quest to graduate college before his peers graduate high school. As a home-schooler, he is unable to arbitrarily skip grade levels, and the American Council on Education sets a minimum age of 16 to take the GED test.

South Florida Sun-Sentinel- Nurses' aides, medical assistants, surgical technicians — Caribbean immigrants are a fast-growing force in South Florida health care.
Technical schools are noticing.
In Lauderhill and Lauderdale Lakes, two Broward cities with a high concentration of Caribbean immigrants, technical schools offering specialties in health care are multiplying. Some schools say the community grew around them, but newer schools say they were drawn to the area by the concentration of potential students.

BRANDON, Fla. — Everest University’s Brandon campus, located just outside of Tampa, has announced it will begin offering bachelor’s degrees in nursing starting in January 2009.
The expansion complements the existing courses offered at the campus, which added associate degrees in January 2007, and just celebrated its first graduating class in October. In total, 18 nurses graduated with associate degrees in nursing as part of the inaugural class.

Winter Park-Full Sail University graduate Darren Lynn Bousman, director of top-grossing Halloween films Saw II, Saw III and Saw IV, returned to campus this week to talk to students about the entertainment industry and share his new feature film. Bousman is director of Repo! The Genetic Opera, a Lionsgate release. Repo! is a gory, over-the-top rock opera whose stars include Paul Sorvino, Sarah Brightman and Paris Hilton.

BAY AREA (Bay News 9) -- Even though the number of people out of work continues to climb, there is still one industry that is looking for new hires.Last month, the U.S. Department of Labor reported that that the health care industry added 26,000 jobs. Over the past year, employment in the field has grown by 348,000. By contrast, one of the harder hit industries - construction - fell by 49,000 jobs in October. Over the last month, retail trade also fell by 38,000 jobs.At Rasmussen College, located in Holiday, campus director Claire Walker said the school has seen a 38 percent increase in students signing up for classes in their School of Allied Health in the past nine months.

OCALA — Thomas Moon is an upbeat guy. He runs his own business, goes to school and teaches Sunday school at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. He has three short words of advice for people wanting to know his secret to success: “Live your life.” And his life is a remarkable one. Moon, 22, has cerebral palsy, which weakens muscle coordination. He uses a wheelchair most of the time, but can walk with effort.

PASCO COUNTY (Bay News 9) -- On Thursday, thousands of potential employees will descend on a job fair in Pasco County in hopes of getting work. More than 30 companies are looking for new employees, including Fifth-Third Bank and Bright House Networks (Bay News 9's parent company). The U.S. Government is also looking to hire 1,000 people for new census jobs that would last at least a year.

Tamba Bay- October 2008- Retire and go back to college for a degree? Many would say "Never! It's all about free time now." But Richard Jaegle of Clearwater went back to school to get a Bachelor of Science in Business Mangement degree at age 70. The articulate Jaegle frist went to college in 1957 to got an Associate Degree in Accouting. "That stood me in good stead, although I always wished I had finished," he said.

OCALA - October 27, 2008- Massage therapy student Judy Black-Smith can see a big difference in the operation of Rasmussen College in just one year. Though she considered Webster a "good" career college, she has seen Rasmussen officials implement tougher requirements for the school's faculty. On Oct. 15, 2007, Webster College became Rasmussen. "They are more picky when it comes to the teachers," said Black-Smith, 39, who will soon graduate with a massage therapy degree.

When we think of higher education in Southwest Florida, we tend to think of Florida Gulf Coast University, Edison State College, Hodges University and Ave Maria University. Yet, two other large, private schools have quietly opened impressive facilities and programs in Lee County.
